Why can't school textbooks be free ?

Why can't school textbooks be free for all Malaysian school children ? A very simple question to Hishammuddin. All government schools and now government aided Religious Schools are given free textbooks. Religious Schools in this context are Islamic Schools.

This assistance is not given to Indian and Chinese medium schools as they are deemed un-nationalist. But they are still Malaysia citizen and there are school children in Indian and Chinese medium schools whose parent are just poor. The children there also student national syllabus and government approved subjects.

For those Indian and Chinese parents who can afford to buy the text books, it is not fair for them because they like everyone like is also paying taxes.

Another racist policy from the Ministry of Education.

Textbooks scheme extended to religious primary schools

JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry is extending the textbooks scheme to integrated religious primary schools next year, albeit only to Government Aided Religious Schools (SABK).

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the ministry had allocated RM1.9mil for the scheme, which would initially cover Johor, Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Terengganu, involving 42 schools and 9,435 pupils.

He said it was Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who mooted the idea of helping the religious school students in the state.

“This will relieve the burden of parents and make sure that those from less fortunate families are not left out in education,” he said.

Hishammuddin urged the community religious schools to register with the ministry to get the necessary assistance.

He said the allocation provided to SABK had risen from RM15.7mil in 2005 to an estimated RM180mil this year. Since 2005, the Government has allocated nearly RM400mil to SABK for the refurbishment of school blocks and facilities as well as for financial aid.

“This shows that the ministry has never marginalised any school,” said Hishammuddin.

He said the number of SABK students had increased from 26,211 in 2005 to 42,014 this year.

Hishammuddin said the ministry had so far registered 134 religious schools.

“If all had registered with the ministry, we would have 381 SABK in the country,” he said at the closing ceremony of the inaugural national kompang selawat and berzanji marhaban competition here yesterday.
