SIBU: Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak Bersatu (PERSB) declared yesterday it will be contesting in 38 seats in the coming state election.

Protem president Noh @ Mohamad Noh Bakeri hinted that their candidates would likely contest on independent tickets if their registration of the party could not be approved even at the eleventh hour.

Mohamad also revealed that he would contest in Daro, adding all their candidates had signed a letter of undertaking requiring them to contest under PERSB ticket (if the party was approved by ROS) or as Independent under the party’s patronage.

“We are eyeing 38 seats and likely to contest on Independent tickets as there has been no news from ROS thus far on our application which was submitted last year. The nomination day is just days away.”

He clarified: “We are neither pro-government nor side with the opposition. In fact, we are the alternative party fighting for the people.”

Among the names Mohamad mentioned were Michael Ding (Marudi), Henry Belawing (Telang Usan), Michael Jok (Belaga) and Luntar Sadil (Balingian).

On the letter of understanding, he said candidates were not to jump ship if elected, failing which their position would be relinquished.

“They must serve their constituencies for four days a week if they are elected. They must also report on the progress and economic development of the people,” said Mohamad, a former PBB member.

Meanwhile, he refuted the news report that protem chairman David Mathew Baru would stand in Ba Kelalan.

“We do not have any candidate in Ba Kelalan as we do not wish to split the opposition votes there, given that PKR has announced that its state liaison chief Baru Bian will contest there,” he said.

The news extract below just illustrates some people's shallow and inconsistent policy.

The poco-poco dance should be allowed if it is for health reasons, said former Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

There was no rational reason for the dance to be banned by the Perak Fatwa Committee if it did not involve alcohol or free sex, he wrote in his blog Thursday.

Mohd Asri was responding to Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria's recent announcement that the poco-poco dance would be banned, describing it as "haram" to Muslims.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambri Abdul Kadir had since said that it would adhere to the ruling made by the committee.

Barisan Nasional Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said he thought the edict was a case of misplaced priorities and that the intention behind the dance needed to be considered.

PAS central political bureau member Khalid Samad described the decision as "ridiculous" and "completely unacceptable."

"People are basically doing it for exercise with no religious intentions behind it," he said.

Meanwhile, in Putrajaya, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said the poco-poco dance was just another form of exercise and should not be banned nationwide, Bernama reported.

"The dance differs from one place to another. Even the songs are different. It has probably become an issue in Perak, but in other states, the dance is regarded like another form of an exercise," she told reporters.

"So far, the decision has yet to be gazetted and has not taken effect. When it takes effect, it will only be in Perak as the decision was not the collective decision of the muftis nationwide."

When asked whether the Malaysian Islamic Development Department would consider banning the dance, Mashitah said it would be done if there was a complaint from the public.

"So far, there is no complaint which says that the dance is associated with the elements that contravene Islamic religious teachings. So, if nobody complained, there is no reason for us to study it," she said.

Tuhan Allah and 1 Malaysia

This one is interesting. It's an idea of Marina Mahathir on Negara Ku. This really is a Catch 22 situation and cannot be 1Malaysia. She really made a point here, read on!

Some self-appointed defenders of Islam including the chief of "1 Malaysia" have insisted that Catholics should use "Tuhan" instead of "Allah" to address the Catholic or Christian God. But in the national anthem, "Tuhan" (not "Allah") bless the country (...Tuhan kurniakan...).

How now ?!!!. If Malay-Muslims are that easily confused as portrayed by some politicians, they must be thinking that Malaysia is blessed by the Catholic/Christian God, and the Muslim God "Allah" is perpetually on leave.

Perhaps, this confusion may cause the government to change the national anthem by replacing "Tuhan" with "Allah" But then again, non-muslims will not be allowed to sing the national anthem. Then it would be non-muslims' turn to be confused. If this issue goes to the courts, even the judges will get kepala pening.

So much for "1 Malaysia "!!!.

Who is Datuk T? Datuk T is an alias for ‘Datuk Trio' - former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik, businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and Perkasa treasurer Datuk Shuib Lazim.

Rahim told this to reporters at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Shazryl was at the press conference but not Shuib.

Rahim at first refused to identify the man in the video, only hinting that “this man may end up being PM”.

Later, however, he repeatedly referred to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the press conference.

Rahim said the man had once asked him to step down for the nation's sake, when he (Rahim) was implicated (but later cleared) in an alleged sex scandal

"Anwar asked me to step down then, saying I was a liability. I was told to go (as Malacca CM) although I was never found guilty," he alleged.

Rahim said that it was now up to the Government to set a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the authenticity of the video.

He said the members of the RCI should comprise people from various quarters and include Perkasa and Kita president Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

“We want NGOs and also media to sit in the RCI. Let everyone see the truth. All political parties - both Government and Opposition - can also be in the RCI," he added.

Rahim said PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang should also be included in the RCI.

Meanwhile, Shazryl told the press conference that they did not go to the police over the sex video as they did not want the issue to be spun into a conspiracy theory.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is not losing any sleep over the possibility of certain quarters filing lawsuits against him for putting them in a negative light in his memoirs.

The former Prime Minister said he was driven to tell the truth in his autobiography, A Doctor in the House: The Memoirs of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which was launched Tuesday.

"There will be those who will not be satisfied.

"If they want to sue, sue lah," he quipped after launching his book at MidValley Megamall.

Dr Mahathir said he had kept the publication of his memoirs a secret until the launching date to avoid possible court injunctions to stop its publication.

"It took me eight years to complete the book.

"I want people to read it. Whatever they think of it is their prerogative," he said.

Dr Mahathir said during his tenure as Prime Minister, he was described as a dictator.

"(In the autobiography) I tried to prove that I am not a dictator. But some people will still feel otherwise," he said, adding that he was expecting brickbats for exposing so much.

To a question from a foreigner, Dr Mahathir said through his book, he wanted to deliver the message that it was not impossible to achieve anything if one was willing to learn.

"I was a commoner, I was not trained in the field of administration, economy or finance.

"But you can learn if you want to learn. The best reward is not the monetary gain but the result of your effort," he said.

"Several chapters were difficult to write because it is all about myself," he said, adding that he was not comfortable promoting himself.

The 809-page book, which retails at RM100 a copy, is available at MPH bookstores nationwide.
