3 aspiring candidates were nominated for the Sibu parliamentary by-election 2010. The battle to win over the 54,695 voters of Sibu has begun with Barisan Nasional and DAP adopting different tactics to woo them. While the DAP is going with its tried and tested ways of raising national issues, the Barisan is sticking to development politics with the focus on the women folk, who make up 53% of the electorate .
Both sides agree that the Chinese, who comprise 67% of the electorate, will be the determining factor for the May 16 poll which sees Barisan’s Robert Lau Hui Yew taking on DAP state chairman Wong Ho Leng, with independent candidate Narawi Haron, an ex-serviceman, hoping to play the spoiler’s role.
