CFIA warns that Mr. Brown instant coffee could contain melamine

Sep 23, 2008

TORONTO — For the second time this week, China's tainted milk scandal has reached Canadian supermarket shelves.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning that certain types of Mr. Brown 3-in-1 instant coffee are being recalled because they might contain melamine, a chemical often used in plastics.

The CFIA said in a statement Tuesday that the instant coffee products were initially recalled in Taiwan and that their Canadian importer, Thai Indochine Trading Inc., is following suit after melamine was discovered in batches of powdered milk at several major dairies throughout China.

The contamination has killed four babies in China so far and sickened nearly 53,000 others.

The three coffee blends, sold in 450 gram packages containing 30 bags of 15 grams each, were sold in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. They have not been linked to any illnesses.

On Sunday, the CFIA issued a similar warning for Nissin Cha Cha Dessert, a product sold in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

The products involved in Tuesday's announcement are:
- Instant Coffee 3-in-1 Mandheling Blend Coffee with a universal product code of 4 710085 122523;
- Instant Coffee 3-in-1 Blue Mountain Blend Coffee with a UPC 4 710085 200597

Cadbury, the famous chocolates maker had earlier recalled 11 chocolate types, including Dairy Milk chocolate from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia because of fears of melamine contamination and as a precautionary step pending further supply of fresh product.

Last week Cadbury said three factories from which it sources its dairy ingredient supplies in China had been tested by the government and no melamine had been found, but further tests had revealed some doubts so the recall was ordered.

So far, Health Ministry of Malaysia and Cadbury Malaysia have not made any press statement regarding the recall of their products in Malaysia.

Cadbury withdraws China chocolate on melamine concern

HONG KONG/LONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - British confectionery group Cadbury Plc said on Monday it was withdrawing all of its 11 chocolate products made in Beijing on concern over the possibility of contamination with melamine in its Chinese plant.

The London-based group said its products, including Dairy Milk chocolate, were being recalled from mainland China and the export markets of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia as a precautionary step pending further supply of fresh product.

A growing list of Chinese milk and milk-related products have been taken off shelves around the world in recent weeks after it came to light that some milk had been contaminated with melamine which led to thousands affected and four deaths.

Melamine is a relatively cheap industrial chemical that can be used to cheat protein quality checks in milk and a week ago the Chinese health ministry said 104 people were seriously ill and close to 40,000 others were affected by contaminated milk.

"The withdrawal is due to concern about the possibility of melamine contamination in our chocolate," said a Cadbury spokesman based at its London headquarters.

Last week Cadbury said three factories from which it sources its dairy ingredient supplies in China had been tested by the government and no melamine had been found, but further tests had revealed some doubts so the recall was ordered.

"We believe it is appropriate to take a precautionary step to withdraw from the market all of our Cadbury chocolate products that have been manufactured in Beijing, pending further supply of fresh product," the group said in a statement.

Melamine found in Cadbury goods

Preliminary tests have found melamine in Cadbury's Chinese-made chocolates, the company says.

At least 50,000 Chinese babies have fallen ill and four been killed by milk tainted with the industrial chemical.

Cadbury had earlier recalled 11 chocolate types from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia because of fears of contamination.

It remains unclear how much melamine was in the recalled products, a Cadbury spokesman told the BBC.

"It's early days, as these are preliminary findings from the tests," the spokesman said.

He emphasised that the only goods affected were those made in the company's Beijing factory, and not those produced in the UK or elsewhere.

China's reputation for food safety has nosedived since the revelations last month that milk products poisoned by melamine were responsible for causing renal problems in babies who drank the milk formula.

In mainland China, lawyers and local rights groups are seeking to support families affected by the scandal, possibly by suing dairies or officials who failed to disclose the problem.

But many say they are facing pressure from the authorities to abandon their efforts, blaming government sensitivity.

Chinese dairy worker monitors production at a plant in Wuhan
China says it has acted firmly to prevent further contamination

"About two dozen of the lawyers have called these past days to say they want to quit the volunteer advice group," Beijing lawyer Li Fangping told Reuters news agency.

"Some of them said that they or their offices were told they would face serious repercussions if they stayed involved," he said.

In a statement issued by its Singapore office, UK-based Cadbury said preliminary tests had "cast doubt on the integrity of a range of our products manufactured in China".

The products are the latest in a list of China-made foods and drinks that have been removed from shelves around the world in the wake of the scandal.

In Jakarta, the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency said on Monday that it had found traces of melamine in chocolate and biscuit products apparently made in China by Kraft Foods and Mars.

The two companies said they were investigating the claims, although their products had earlier been cleared of melamine tainting.

Some reports raised the possibility the products - including Oreo wafers, M&Ms and Snickers - could be counterfeit.

"We have asked our trade partners and retailers to suspend the sales of our products in accordance to the agency's order," the Mars spokesman in Indonesia, Bondan Ardi, told the Associated Press on Monday.

The companies involved said they would conduct their own tests.

The scandal came to light earlier this month when baby milk powder from the Sanlu Group was found to contain the industrial chemical melamine.

Since then, at least 22 other companies have been implicated.

Melamine is used in making plastics and is high in nitrogen, which makes products appear to have a higher protein content.

Health experts say that ingesting small amounts does no harm but sustained use can cause kidney stones and renal failure, especially among the young.

Cadbury Pulls Melamine-Laced Chocolate From China

British candy maker Cadbury pulls chocolates made in China after tests find melamine
By MIN LEE Associated Press Writer
HONG KONG September 29, 2008 (AP)

British candy maker Cadbury announced a recall Monday of chocolate made in its Beijing factory after it was found to contain melamine, the industrial chemical that has sickened tens of thousands of Chinese children.

The 11 recalled items were sold in parts of Asia and the Pacific, the company said in a statement. Cadbury's chocolates sold in the United States were not affected, said a spokesman for Hershey's, Cadbury's sole U.S. distributor.

Meanwhile, Kraft Foods, the maker of Oreo cookies, and Mars, the maker of M&Ms and Snickers candy, questioned the findings of Indonesian tests that identified melamine in samples of their products made in China.

Both Kraft Foods and Mars said they would comply with an Indonesian recall but planned to conduct their own tests and look into the possibility the tainted products were counterfeits.

Melamine-laced baby formula and other dairy products in China have been blamed for sickening nearly 54,000 children and leading to four infant deaths. The industrial chemical, which is high in nitrogen, is believed to have been added to watered-down milk to mask the resulting protein deficiency and fool quality tests.

Preliminary tests showed melamine in Cadbury chocolates produced at the candy maker's Beijing factory, but it was too early to say how much of the chemical was in them, said a Cadbury spokesman who declined to be identified because of company policy.

Another official reached through the company's London office said there was no way the contaminated chocolate could find its way into other countries because the Chinese factory only supplies Australia, Taiwan, Nauru, Hong Kong and Christmas Island.

"That factory in Beijing only exports to those markets. It's only a small factory," said the official. He said Chinese production makes up only 0.5 percent of Cadbury's global sales, and the recalled items are "less than that because it's only chocolate."

The recalled products included Cadbury Dark Chocette, Cadbury Eclairs, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut Chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk Cookies Chocolate and Cadbury Hazelnut Praline Chocolate.

Cadbury's Chocolate Safe in U.S.

Cadbury's Chocolate Recall Limited to Asia, Australia; Company Notes Melamine Risk

By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Health News

Sept. 29, 2008 -- The chocolate company Cadbury is temporarily taking certain chocolate products off the market -- but only in Asia and Australia.

In a news release, Cadbury calls the move a "precautionary step" because some Chinese dairy products are tainted with melamine, a chemical that artificially makes milk appear to have more protein.

Melamine can cause kidney diseases. In China, three babies have died and more than 54,000 have sought medical treatment related to melamine-tainted dairy products, according to the World Health Organization.

The FDA is following China's melamine problem. As of Sept. 25, FDA testing of milk-based products imported into the U.S. from China hadn't turned up any melamine contamination. The FDA warns against using Chinese-made infant formulas, which aren't approved for sale in the U.S.
Cadbury Chocolate

Cadbury is withdrawing a range of its chocolate products and Choclairs -- all made at Cadbury's Beijing plant -- from the market in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Australia.

Cadbury products made at that plant are only exported to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Australia.

Cadbury Eclairs are also temporarily coming off the market in Australia because they were made in Beijing. Cadbury states that a "small amount" of that product had also been exported to Christmas Island (an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean), and the South Pacific island nation of Nauru.

"No other products and countries are affected and consumers in all other countries can continue to enjoy our products with confidence," states Cadbury, adding that "Chinese dairy products are not used in any other Cadbury products we manufacture outside China."

Cadbury plans to get those products back on the market in Asia and Australia as soon as possible.

Although Cadbury products sold in the U.S. are safe to eat, another sweet -- White Rabbit Candy -- is being recalled because it might be tainted with melamine.

QFCO Inc. of Burlingame, Calif., is recalling White Rabbit Candy, which was distributed in California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington state. All packages have a logo of a white rabbit on the front with the words "White Rabbit." No illnesses have been linked to White Rabbit Candy.

You can return White Rabbit Candy to the place of purchase for a full refund. For more information on the White Rabbit Candy recall, call QFCO at 650-697-6633.

Last week, the FDA also warned consumers to avoid seven Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products made by the Taiwanese company King Car Food Industrial Co. Ltd because the nondairy creamer used to make those products may contain melamine. Those products are:

Cadbury: Melamine Found in Chinese-Made Chocolates

HONG KONG — British candy maker Cadbury said Monday it is recalling 11 types of Chinese-made chocolates after tests found they contained the industrial chemical melamine.

A Cadbury spokesman said it was too early to say how much of the chemical was in the chocolates.

"These are preliminary findings from tests. And it's too early to say where the source was or the extent of it," the spokesman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

He declined to be named because of company policy.

Cadbury said in a statement it has recalled 11 chocolate products made at its factory in Beijing which are distributed in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia.

The company said, however, that all its dairy suppliers have been cleared by government milk testing.

China's recent food safety scandal started with the discovery of melamine, which is used to make plastics, in baby milk powder.

Four infants have died and some 54,000 have developed kidney stones or other illnesses after drinking the contaminated baby formula.

Authorities say suppliers might have added melamine, which is rich in nitrogen, to watered-down milk to deceive quality tests for protein.

Dr Koh Tsu Koon, the acting president of Gerakan is mulling about quitting the Barisan Nasional coalition caused by recent sentiments, among it the defiant Ahmad Ismail factor as well as losing confidence on BN leadership.

Many seen Gerakan's move as following the footsteps of UPKO from Sabah who is sending a strong signal to Barisan Nasional to quit the coalition as well as SAPP from Sabah who has already out of Barisan Nasional.

Meanwhile, leaders from other BN component party is treating Gerakan as
parti perosak (party spoilers) or kudis (lice) and demand Gerakan to make it's stand. BN is right in wanting a stronger coalition and Gerakan is another prick in the butt. As for Gerakan itself, there is no great return if they just keeping saying it. Instead, they should prove something to BN and just quit the BN coalition. No want a fence sitter.

Dr Koh considering the possibility of party leaving Barisan Nasional
By LISA GOH

KUALA LUMPUR: Leaving the Barisan Nasional and joining Pakatan Rakyat is one of the three options being considered by Gerakan.

Party acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the two other options were to stay with the ruling coalition or leave and be independent.

“We are not ruling out any possibility (of leaving) at this moment. We have to assess but we are not closing the door.

“Neither are we saying we will definitely leave. It’s something we need to assess but we cannot do it based on sentiments alone,” he told reporters after launching the KL-Federal Territory (FT) state delegates conference here yesterday.

“If you go on sentiments alone, I would say more than 60% (want to leave) but we are taking a lot of factors into consideration. A decision cannot be based just on sentiments.”

He added that party leaders were examining how the political scenario in the country would continue to change and had been getting feedback from the grassroots.

“It’s a very trying time and there is need for a lot of rational, objective analysis. It cannot be a straightforward, simplistic decision,” he said.

In his opening speech, Dr Koh announced that he would be contesting for the party presidency in the October party elections.

“I am offering myself for the post, but I have also set a time-frame for myself, and it is unlikely that I will go beyond two terms.

“I would like to have younger and newer leaders to continue the process of political commitment,” he said.

Asked if he would name his deputy, he replied: “We will let the delegates decide.”

On some 20 FT Gerakan members defecting to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Dr Koh expressed surprise.

“It was only last week that (former Setiawangsa Gerakan chief) Li Tiam Chai was with me in a meeting and there were no signs that he was not happy.

“We were talking about how to strengthen the party.

“So, I am surprised but I will continue with the veterans,” he said.

On the Umno leadership transition, Dr Koh said he hoped it would be “smooth and peaceful.”

“Even though it is an internal party matter, we are also concerned because the Umno leader becomes the leader of Barisan and the Federal Government,” he said.

Gerakan mulls quitting Barisan, may join Pakatan
By LISA GOH

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan is considering the option of leaving Barisan Nasional and joining the Pakatan Rakyat opposition alliance.

Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said this was among three options for the party - the other two being to either stay with the ruling coalition, or leave and become independent.

“We are not ruling out any possibility at this moment. We have to assess the situation, but we are not closing any doors.

“Neither are we saying we will definitely leave. It’s something we need to assess but we cannot do it based on sentiments alone,” he told reporters after launching the KL-Federal Territory (FT) state delegates conference here on Sunday.

Asked if he would name his deputy, he replied: “We will let the delegates decide.”

He was also asked to comment on some 20 FT Gerakan members who had defected to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), including former FT Gerakan information bureau chief Gan Kok Keng and former Setiawangsa Gerakan chief Li Tiam Chai.

“I feel surprised because it was only last week when Li Tiam Chai was with me in a meeting and there were no signs that he was not happy.

“We were talking about how to strengthen the party. So I am surprised but I will continue with the veterans, and new members are committed,” he said.

Dr Koh also commented on the Umno leadership transition, which he hoped would be “smooth and peaceful.”

“Even though the change in Umno leadership is an internal party matter, but we are also concerned because the Umno leader also becomes the leader of Barisan and the Federal Government,” he said.

Earlier this month, Gerakan became embroiled in the controversy over former Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail’s alleged racist remarks in which he purportedly described Malaysian Chinese as “squatters.”

Gerakan leaders had demanded an apology and for action to be taken against the Umno man, who in turn blamed Gerakan for Barisan’s poor showing in the March 8 general election, which saw the state of Penang fall to to the opposition.

The war of words even saw Ahmad’s supporters tearing down a picture of Dr Koh after a press conference.

The Umno Supreme Council subsequently suspended Ahmad from his party posts for three years, although he remains a member. No further action was taken against him.

Barisan leaders to Gerakan chief: Make a stand!
By CHRISTINA CHIN and ANN TAN

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Barisan Nasional leaders want Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon to make a stand on the party’s position in the coalition.

Penang Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Abdul Rashid Abdullah said the former chief minister must determine the direction of his party.

“As a leader, he must be responsible to the coalition. He needs to set the course for Gerakan and make his position clear. After all, a fish rots from the head down.

“I regret that we have parti perosak (party spoilers) within Barisan. These factions can leave if they want to,” he said.

On Sunday, Dr Koh said among the options being considered by the party was to join Pakatan Rakyat; to stay with the ruling coalition; or to leave Barisan and become independent.

He said based on party sentiment, more than 60% wanted to leave Barisan but the party was still assessing the situation.

State MCA deputy chief Datuk Lau Chiek Tuan said Dr Koh should disclose his personal stand.

“Don’t hide behind members’ opinions. Tell us what you want - you are the party’s acting president,” he said.

Penang Gerakan Youth chief Oh Tong Keong thinks the party should give Barisan “one or two years” before deciding.

Oh, who is gunning for the party’s number two post in the national Youth wing, said such an important decision cannot be made in a “hot political” climate.

“All Barisan component parties are going through trying times. Let’s wait for the Umno leadership transition to see if the relationship between coalition parties can improve.

“The next general election would probably be in 2012. We can always call for an emergency general meeting in one or two years time if we want to pull out of Barisan - it’s not too late,” he said, adding that party members should not be hasty.

There is a silver lining for Jane Lim's parents who are reluctant to release her for her National Service training stint following the death of her brother (Ricky, who passed away

Tiki Lafe, the newly-appointed National Service Training Council chairman has promised to look into her case on compassionate grounds and out of respect for Jane Lim's parents.

New NS chief gives Jane hope

PUTRAJAYA: There’s fresh hope for 17-year-old Jane Lim, whose parents do not want her to attend camp following the death of her brother days after returning from his NS stint.

Newly-appointed National Service Training Council chairman Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe has promised to look into her case.

Dr Tiki, who is also Mas Gading MP and was a member of the Cabinet Committee on National Service when he was a deputy minister, said in his personal view that the “wishes of her parents should be respected.”

“Personally, I think her case deserves support and we need to look into the matter based on compassionate grounds and her family background.

“I think the wishes of her parents should be respected. So, I will look into the matter,” he said in an interview here yesterday.

Dr Tiki was commenting on Lim, who is seeking exemption from NS duty after her parents objected, saying that they would not let their only surviving child go for training following her brother Ricky’s death.

Ricky, 20, died on Sept 15 after completing his three-month national service at the Lagenda Gunung Ledang Asahan camp on Sept 6.

However, NS Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil had said Lim would have to attend training because her brother’s death was not a valid reason for exemption.

Dr Tiki said that if Lim did not want to attend the camp, the council could easily find another 100 students to take her place.

“This is because we all know that for every one person who gets called to attend NS training, there are another 100 people who want to go but don’t get the chance.”

On taking over from previous chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Dr Tiki said he would be chairing his first council meeting at the NS headquarters after the Hari Raya celebrations on Oct 7.

Asked if he had any plans for the development of the programme, which is participated by some 100,000 youths each year, Dr Tiki said: “Yes, I have my plans but I also have to look at what the council has already planned for.”

Lee, who is also the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman, called on the police and the public to work together to fight crime.

In light of the recent high-profile crime cases in Penang, he said the police should recruit more personnel and step up their efforts with the help of the public and the Government, especially policy makers.

UPKO To Quit Barisan Nasional ?

United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) lead by its deputy president, Wilfred Bumburing lamented that UPKO will consider it's position within the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition after they were dissatisfied by action of NRD in the recent case whereby a local Sabahan is treated as a foreigner.

If the Barisan Nasional leadership did not deal with this "threat" seriously, UPKO will be following SAPP in quiting BN coalition.

* UPKO frustrated with Barisan Nasional

From The News Strait Times

When Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee announced the party’s decision to leave the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition on Sept 17, it did not surprise many people as it was expected.

This was because three months earlier, SAPP had given some indication of its intentions.

But when United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) yesterday threatened to review its position in Barisan Nasional, it came as a shock; as it was reminiscent of SAPP’s political move.

Upko is the second BN component party in Sabah to make a “strong statement” against BN after SAPP.

While SAPP unveiled Sabah-related issues as its political “weapon”, Upko appeared to be unhappy with the way the National Registration Department (NRD) handled the plight of 78-year-old Yong Lee Hua, a Sino-Kadazan, who was issued a red identiy card (IC) with the status of a permanent resident when she went to replace her blue IC that she lost in a supermarket in Penampang last year.

Surprised by the downgrading, Upko deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing was quoted as saying yesterday that taking away the citizenship of a locally-born Bumiputera and forcing the person to take permanent resident status was a shocking display of incompetence from a department rigged with controversies, including dubious ICs issued to illegal immigrants via false Statutory Declarations.

“This action by the NRD infringes the basic rights of Malaysians in Sabah and if it is not rectified, Upko must seriously review its position in Barisan,” said Bumburing, who is member of Parliament for Tuaran.

So will Upko follow SAPP because of its dissatisfaction with the BN? A local political analyst, Iskandar Martin Gayo, believed that Upko may have no plans to pull out of BN for now although the Sabah-based party had been quite vocal of late in airing the grouses and grievances of the people of Sabah.

“I think what Upko wants is for the government to rectify the ’mistake’ of a federal government department and it’s not an ultimatum. There is nothing wrong with it. After all what Upko is fighting for is for the good of the local people in Sabah.

“It’s already an open secret that Sabah is inundated with illegal immigrants and some of them have even managed to acquire the MyKad through dubious means, which ultimately qualifies for citizenship.

“How can these people get citizenship so easily when our own people are struggling to get it?” he asked.

He urged the federal government to let Sabahans lead the NRD and Immigration Department in Sabah as they would be more familiar with problems affecting the local population.

Iskandar said the state government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman had been working hard, together with the federal government, to tackle the problem of illegal immigrants.

The issue of illegal immigrants, he said, should not arise anymore as the state and federal governments were serious about solving it once and for all by launching a massive operation to flush out illegals in Sabah recently.

“Recent operations had resulted in thousands of illegal immigrants being sent back to their country of origin. The local people should give the government a chance to complete this gigantic task; all this cannot be accomplished overnight,” he said.

Iskandar hoped the case involving Yong Lee Hua highlighted by Upko was an isolated one and without necessitating it having to think about its position in BN.

He said even Upko president and Penampang MP Tan Sri Bernard Dompok had previously denied that the party would leave BN.

Instead, Upko leaders would remain loyal to BN chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, he said.

Upko has four MPs — Dompok, Bumburing, Datuk Dr Marcus Majigoh (Putatan) and Datuk Siringan Gubat (Ranau). — BERNAMA

Upko may review position in BN over woman’s case

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Upko is threatening to review its position in Barisan Nasional if the National Registration Department (NRD) fails to rectify its mistake of registering an elderly bumiputra citizen as a permanent resident.

Upko deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing said that taking away the citizenship of bumiputras and forcing them to take permanent resident status displayed incompetence of a department rigged with controversies.

He said this in reaction to the dilemma of 78-year-old Sino-Kadazan woman Yong Lee Hua @ Piang Lin who lost her identity card (IC) in May, but NRD issued her a red identity card and asked her to apply for citizenship again.

“This action by the NRD infringes on the basic rights of Malaysians in Sabah and if it is not rectified, Upko must seriously review its position in the Barisan.

“To me, this is the last straw of the mess in NRD, that is turning locals into foreigners and letting foreigners become citizens,” said Bumburing.

Yong holds a native certificate issued in 1963.

She lost her original identity card (IC) on Feb 12 and made an application for a replacement.

She was issued a red IC a few months later, with NRD officials saying that it was normal procedure.

However, the mother of seven children went back to the NRD with proof of citizenship documents.

To her shock, an official at the NRD office admitted there might have been a mistake but advised her to apply for citizenship instead of the department rectifying it.

Illegals gain citizenship; Sabahans lose theirs

Kota Kinabalu: The United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) on Friday demanded that the National Registration Department (NRD) undo its mistake of turning a Sabahan Bumiputra into a Permanent Resident.

Its Deputy President Datuk Seri Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing said what had happened to 78-year-old Yong Lee Hua @ Piang Lin, a Sino-Kadazan, was simply outrageous and warrants Upko seriously reviewing its position in the Barisan Nasional if found to be not just an isolated case.

"How can this happen to a Malaysian citizen who was born here and holding a Native Certificate to prove her citizenship," he said.

He said that if the NRD had committed a genuine mistake, it should have reverted Yong's new status back to a Malaysian citizen right away.

"If the department had purposely committed the atrocious act, they must undo its gross mistake," he said, adding it is sending a bad signal across the nation, particularly to genuine citizens.

"Illegal immigrants can easily acquire MyKads that subsequently enable them to purchase Native Title (NT) lands.

"What is happening with the NRD? This is totally unacceptable. And if this is the tip of the iceberg, I'm afraid we cannot guarantee protection to the genuine citizens," he said.

He said if the Barisan Nasional (BN) Government is not willing to look into this matter as well as into how illegal immigrants could mysteriously acquire Malaysian Identity Cards, Upko will take up the matter and fight for the people.

"If the NRD or government has no satisfactory answer, I strongly urge Upko to seriously review its position in the BN because an identification document is a very important matter as it shows their sense of belonging."

Bumburing said if the NRD is unable to handle Yong's case, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar must intervene.

Yong's life had been turned upside down as a result of the NRD oversight and incompetence.

Her nightmare began when she lost her IC at a Supermarket at Penampang Baru on Feb. 12.

On the same day, she lodged a police report and subsequently on Feb 26, applied for a replacement IC at the NRD office in Donggongon.

After several months, she went and collected her replacement IC at the NRD office and was given a red IC.

She asked the officer why it was red and the lady officer said for senior citizens who lost their IC, the department normally replaced them with red ICs.

She didn't find anything amiss with the officer's explanation until she reached home when her children said red ICs were issued to people with Permanent Resident status.

With the help of her children, they brought the matter up with the NRD together with supporting documents such as her Native Certificate that was issued by the Native Court on Sept 24, 1963, bank books and passport.

The NRD officer admitted there could have been an error but instead of rectifying it, Yong was asked to "apply for Malaysian citizenship" which she duly complied by submitting an application form to the office on July 2, last year.

Her problem did not end there because soon after, her bank accounts at Amanah Saham Nasional and Alliance Bank were frozen making her unable to withdraw money for her daily expenses.

Fluent in Kadazan and Chinese, the mother of seven sons and one daughter can no longer travel outside the country as she could not renew her expired passport.

Strangely, she was allowed to cast her vote at Peak Nam Thong Kindergarten during the recent Mar 8 general elections using her driving license as identity document since her record in the polling list was still intact.

But her identification records at the Immigration Department, however, had completely "disappeared".

Everywhere Yong goes now, she only uses her driving license as proof of identity because she is too embarrassed with her predicament.

She now feared that her "new status" would have serious repercussion on her sons and daughter.

Resource Development and Information Technology Assistant Minister, Donald Peter Mojuntin who helped highlight Yong's case, said if it could happen to her, the children's citizenship could also be withdrawn.

"There has never been a case like this before when genuine Malaysians had their citizenship canceled. If this can happen to her, it can happen to anybody (Malaysians)," he said.

As Upko Bureau Chief for Citizenship and Security, the Moyog Assemblyman said he would be pursuing the matter with Sabah NRD Director and also with the Home Minister.

He said that for the NRD to admit their mistake and then asking Yong to reapply for citizenship is simply illogical.

'Let Sabahans head depts'

Kota Kinabalu: Both BN component PBS and opposition PKR said the case of a Sabahan Bumiputra being downgraded to that of a Permanent Resident highlights the need for both the State NRD and Immigration to be headed by Sabahans.

Parti Bersatu Sabah Chief Information officer Johnny Mositun said PBS had been calling for Sabahans to lead the two Federal agencies since they would be more familiar with problems affecting the local population.

At the same time, he said PBS had been lodging so many reports to the police and Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) and also included lists of dubious Identity Cards (ICs) issued to illegal immigrants via false Statutory Declarations.

He said PBS is baffled that the National Registration Department could conveniently do so to a genuine citizen but not to illegal immigrants holding MyKads.

"Nothing seems to be done but now we have our own citizen having her citizenship reviewed easily and judging from the news reports her plight was also taken lightly by the NRD," he said in a statement, Saturday.

Mositun, who is a Deputy Speaker, was commenting on the plight of 78-year-old Yong Lee Hua @ Piang Lin, a Sino-Kadazan who was issued with a red IC with the status of a PR when she replaced her blue IC that she lost in a supermarket in Penampang Baru last year.

It was also reported that when the woman enquired about the mix up she was asked to "apply for Malaysian citizenship", instead.

This is despite a Sijil Anak Negeri (SAN or Native Certificate) issued on Dec. 5, 1963, verifying Yong's status as a Sino-Kadazan.

"We find Yong's case as appalling and unacceptable. It reflects badly on the system of the NRD. To me the information given by Yong should have been sufficient for her to get her original blue IC back," said Mositun.

He said if it was a case of the NRD playing by the book then "it should not be difficult for the NRD to do the same to review and revoke all the Malaysian ICs that have been issued to illegal immigrants".

"We want the Government to seriously look into this and rectify the glaring weaknesses in the NRD system urgently to safeguard the interest of Sabahans better," he said.

Meanwhile, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah Deputy Chairperson Christina Liew also said both these posts should be replaced by Sabahans in view of what happened.

She said all Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties should also quit the coalition in protest over the manner in which genuine Malaysians in Sabah are being treated by the Department.

Liew believed what was done to Yong smacked of a hidden agenda as it is common knowledge that illegal immigrants entering Sabah through the back door can easily acquire Malaysian citizenship via the MyKad, IMM13 or PR status through authentic or dubious channels.

According to her, those illegals now in possession of the MyKad are in a privileged position such that they can secure Bumiputra status or apply for or buy NT land in Sabah.

Yong revealed her predicament at a press conference called by Resource Development and Information Technology Assistant Minister, Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin on Thursday.

Liew concurred with Mojuntin that there was no reasonable explanation from the JPN as to why Yong's citizenship was changed to the status of a PR.

It is understood that applicants for red IC normally have to wait for 9-12 months for the outcome but in Yong's case it took merely a few months.

A private developer in Miri is encroaching into a century-old settlement, with Miri Land and Survey Department giving their consent.

Village folk from 13 Kedayan-Malay kampungs in northern Sarawak, who are descendants of the Brunei Malays, are in dire straits after the entire population of 10,000 people from the 13 villages were issued an ultimatum to move out by Monday.

Miri Land and Survey Department claimed that those land are on provisional or temporary leases. On September 15, those villagers were served a letter to inform them to move out 14 days after the letter. Thus, if no one is helping the villagers by September 29, 2008 the bulldozers from the private developer will roll into the villagers and destroy their kampong !

Sarawak villagers being evicted from ancestral land

By STEPHEN THEN

MIRI: Village folk from 13 Kedayan-Malay kampungs in northern Sarawak are up in arms over a move by the Sarawak Land and Survey Department and a private developer to evict them from their century-old settlement.

These Kedayan-Malays, who are descendants of the Brunei Malays, are in dire straits after the entire population of 10,000 people from the 13 villages were issued an ultimatum to move out by Monday.

They have received eviction notices from the department, and a letter from the lawyer of the company that will be taking over the land, to vacate their homes by Monday. The affected villages are located some 40km south of Miri City, along the Sarawak Second Coastal Highway near the Miri-Bintulu divisional boundary.

On Saturday, dozens of these affected villagers staged a demonstration at the roadside of the highway starting at 8am to get the attention of passing motorists towards their plight. They unfurled banners and placards denouncing their eviction. The crowd grew as passers-by joined in the protest.

Two elderly Kedayan chieftains, Penghulu Sahar Pusha and Bengkil Bangkol, also joined the demonstration.

They showed The Star the lawyer letters they had received dated Sept 15, this year. The letter states that the villagers must vacate their homes within 14 days from Sept 15. Sahar said the 13 villages affected by the eviction are Kampung Batu Satu Beraya, Kampung Kejapi, Kampung Keluru Jaya, Kampung Orak, Kampung Beraya, Kampung Butir, Kampung Keluru Tengah, Kampung Subok, Kampung Sapaou, Kampung Sebayau, Kampung Tusan, Kampung Uban and Kampung Telud.

“This move to evict us is a huge shock to all of us. We have been living in these villages since 1910. Recently, the State Land and Survey Department and the private developer sent us letters informing us that the land we are living on had been taken over for development purposes.

“We were told that they have plans to develop sawmill and oil-palm plantations. We were informed that 1,800 hectares of our land had already been allocated to a sawmill.

“All the 13 kampungs have a total of 5,500 hectares of land. The total population is about 10,000. This sudden move to evict us is shocking indeed. Where are we to go? This is our ancestral home. We have been here for almost 100 years,” he said when interviewed at the site.

Bengkil said the private developer had already bulldozed four cemeteries in its effort to clear the land to build an access road. The desecrated cemeteries are Kubur Kejapil, Kubur Batir, Kubur Sungai Jalil and Kubur Sungai Payau, he said.

“We have sought urgent meetings with the relevant authorities to help us. We have recently met with the Miri Land and Survey Department officials but they told us we have no rights over the land because we only have provisional leases.

“We protested saying that we have native customary rights because our ancestors have been there since 1910. However, they refuse to withdraw the eviction directives,” said Bengkil.

The affected villagers are now appealing to Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to intervene and stop the eviction.

Malaysia To Fight Islamophobia

Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, Foreign Minister said that Malaysia had agreed to be at the forefront of an international effort and to work with the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) to play a more positive role in the effort to fight "Islamophobia", or Anti-Muslim.

While I can applaud the move, I
am reserve (skeptical) about Malaysia's intention. I mean, Malaysia want to take the lead in convincing the world not to fear Islam but on home ground, Islam is everything and non-Muslim in Malaysia are in fact dreaded the rules of Islam.

KL to fight ‘Islamophobia’

By FOO YEE PING

NEW YORK: Malaysia has pledged to be at the forefront of an international effort to fight “Islamophobia”.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said that Malaysia had agreed to work with the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) to play a more positive role in the effort.

To counter the “illogical” portrayals of Islam, he said an international forum would be held early next year in the United States to be attended by the heads of government, scholars and representatives from organisations linked with religious tolerance.

Briefing Malaysian journalists here on Wednesday of his meeting with OIC secretary-general Ekmeleddin Ihsa-noglu, Dr Rais said there should be a more accurate portrayal of the religion.

The minister, who is leading Malaysia’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly here, said the OIC had expressed the need for Malaysia’s involvement in the effort.

“If we, as a member nation of the OIC, do not give our co-operation, then we would be failing as a member of the OIC,” he added.

Dr Rais said the United States was picked to host the forum because of “the diverse views of religions here.”

“This is also where Sept 11 took place,” he said, referring to the terrorist attacks here in 2001.

He also hoped that the forum would open a new window to better understanding of civilisation, adding that he would present a report to the Cabinet on the plans for the forum.

Malacca National Service Supervisory Panel head Wong Nai Chee said that although exemption was given for valid health reasons or physical impairment, Jane’s case (her brother Ricky, passed away after completing his NS training) should be considered on the basis of her suffering real psychological trauma.

NS Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil had said that Ricky’s death was not a valid reason for Jane to seek exemption.

I guess Abdul Hadi has no emotion and is very inconsiderate to Jane's case.

Helping Jane get exemption from NS

MALACCA: Several parties are helping 17-year-old Jane Lim in her bid to be exempted from national service (NS) following the recent death of her brother soon after attending the three-month training.

Malacca National Service Supervisory Panel head Wong Nai Chee said that although exemption was given for valid health reasons or physical impairment, Jane’s case should be considered on the basis of her suffering real psychological trauma.

Several NS officials, including those from the Lagenda Gunung Ledang Asahan camp here, visited Jane’s family on Wednesday to assist in her appeal for exemption.

Wong, the former Kota Melaka MP, said this was a positive move because the officials had taken note of her case.

He said that he fully supported her appeal and would follow up with the case.

Jane’s plight was highlighted in the media by her parents Lim Geok Kim and Meng Yeok who were concerned about her safety following the death of their 20-year-old son, Ricky.

Ricky died at home on Sept 15, nine days after completing his training at the Lagenda Gunung Ledang Asahan camp.

An initial post-mortem could not identify the cause of death and health authorities are carrying out further tissue analysis which is expected to take between two and three months.

Although the couple is not blaming the authorities for Ricky’s death, they said they could not risk losing Jane, their only remaining child.

NS Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil had said that Ricky’s death was not a valid reason for Jane to seek exemption.

Lim confirmed that eight officials visited him at his home in Tanjung Kling to get his daughter’s particulars.

“I’m glad and am so relieved that the authorities have taken note of my daughter’s plight and are willing to consider her appeal.

“I really hope they allow her to be with us considering our family’s recent loss,” he said.

Malaysia Remains Corrupted

Malaysia, that will be the government, the private sectors and the public sectors remains corrupted despite the many promises by authorities to stamp out graft and bribery. The situation has not changed since 8 years ago. This is what Transparency International deduced from a survey.

While the ruling government is bickering with the opposition parties on lame, petty issues and unnecessary racial issues, some countries had made better progress than Malaysia. Malaysia position is 47 vs Singapore's No. 4. What the heck.

Of course, state like Sarawak still remained among the most corrupted states in Malaysia. But don't judge the Sarawakian, blame the leaders of the state government.

From TheStar

Malaysia still lagging in Corruption Perceptions Index

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s score in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) has not improved this year, according to a survey conducted by Transparency International.

The country’s ranking declined to 47 out of 180 countries in 2008, compared to 36 out of 91 countries in 2001 and 43 out of 179 countries in 2007.

Transparency International Malaysia said in a statement that this showed that some countries had made better progress than Malaysia.

“The country’s CPI score remained at 5.1, the same as in 2007. The score for Malaysia for the last eight years since 2001 had been between 4.9 (2002) and 5.1 (2005, 2007, 2008).

“This shows that the trend of the CPI for Malaysia has remained mediocre at mid-point, with no improvement over the last eight years,” said the statement.

In South-East Asia, Malaysia ranked second behind Singapore, which scored 9.1 on the index. Last was Myanmar with a score of 1.3.

The statement said a number of high profile cases had dampened public confidence in the integrity of government institutions, such as the V.K Lingam case, alleged corruption cases in government procurement, abuses in land excision and fraud on land transfer, and corruption in business transfers at the local municipality level.

Transparency International, however, commended Malaysia on the setting up of Pemudah, a Special Task Force to Facilitate Business, and the Prime Minister’s initiative to reform the judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Agency.

The Health Ministry on Wednesday released an additional list of milk and dairy products not contaminated with melamine and are safe for consumption. Our Health Ministry is quite slow and most of the time, waiting for the counter-part (AgriFood & Veterinary Authority) from Singapore to make the first move.

I'm sure you have heard that two names are mentioned in some reports, i.e, Nestle and Dutch Lady. So, to be sure, check if their products (from Nestle and Dutch Lady) are listed in the safe list below.
