SIBU: Parti Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak Bersatu (PERSB) declared yesterday it will be contesting in 38 seats in the coming state election.

Protem president Noh @ Mohamad Noh Bakeri hinted that their candidates would likely contest on independent tickets if their registration of the party could not be approved even at the eleventh hour.

Mohamad also revealed that he would contest in Daro, adding all their candidates had signed a letter of undertaking requiring them to contest under PERSB ticket (if the party was approved by ROS) or as Independent under the party’s patronage.

“We are eyeing 38 seats and likely to contest on Independent tickets as there has been no news from ROS thus far on our application which was submitted last year. The nomination day is just days away.”

He clarified: “We are neither pro-government nor side with the opposition. In fact, we are the alternative party fighting for the people.”

Among the names Mohamad mentioned were Michael Ding (Marudi), Henry Belawing (Telang Usan), Michael Jok (Belaga) and Luntar Sadil (Balingian).

On the letter of understanding, he said candidates were not to jump ship if elected, failing which their position would be relinquished.

“They must serve their constituencies for four days a week if they are elected. They must also report on the progress and economic development of the people,” said Mohamad, a former PBB member.

Meanwhile, he refuted the news report that protem chairman David Mathew Baru would stand in Ba Kelalan.

“We do not have any candidate in Ba Kelalan as we do not wish to split the opposition votes there, given that PKR has announced that its state liaison chief Baru Bian will contest there,” he said.
