Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg, Sarawak Housing Minister said that he would propose to the state cabinet to hold the birthday of the Head of State on September 16 in order to commemorate Malaysia Day. Hopefully, all the state cabinet minister gave their full support to Abang Jo's proposal.
While the nation celebrates its independence day on August 31, some are of the opinion that September 16 holds more significance, given that the day saw the birth of Malaysia.
Sabah observed a public holiday on this date to commemorate the formation of Malaysia.

Johari to propose TYT birthday on Malaysia Day
KUCHING: Housing Minister Dato Sri Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg said that he would propose to the state cabinet to hold the birthday of the Head of State on Sept 16 in order to commemorate Malaysia Day.
As it was, the birthday of the Head of State had been gazetted on Sept 16 despite the date being altered to fall on the first week of September, he said.
“Perhaps what we do is to stick to Sept 16 as the Head of State’s Birthday, based on the gazette. This is when Sarawak places it as an important day. We will discuss in the cabinet. I can propose this to the cabinet,” he told reporters when making a working visit to Kampung Kudei’s new mosque here yesterday.
He said that a circular had altered this to state that the Head of State’s Birthday to fall on the first Saturday of September, even if the gazette had stated Sept 16.
As such, slight adjustment would have to be made to mark this important day, he said.
September 16 is the day when Sarawak, Sabah, Singapore and the peninsular states form Malaysia.
There are debates in recent years as to why this significant day was not given due recognition.
While the nation celebrates its independence day on August 31, some are of the opinion that September 16 holds more significance, given that the day saw the birth of Malaysia.
Last Sunday, thesundaypost carried an interview with ‘the grand old man of Sarawak politics’ Datuk Amar James Wong Kim Min who clearly was disappointed over the little attention being given to Sept 16.
“People don’t seem to understand or seem not to pay enough attention. Malaysia came into existence on Sept 16. Not Aug 31, which has no meaning to us Sarawakians,” Wong said.
